Louisiana legislators begin special session without clear plan to solve $304 million budget deficit

The Louisiana Legislature will get eight days, five hours and 30 minutes to close a $304 million midyear budget deficit, starting Monday, but it remains unclear what route will become most popular for lawmakers to bridge the gap.

Gov. John Bel Edwards has called lawmakers to Baton Rouge for the nearly nine-day special session starting at 6:30 p.m. Monday. The special session must wrap up by midnight Feb. 22, but legislators, facing their third special session in a year, say they are hopeful things will wrap up ahead of the deadline.
